Considerations for Hiring Seasonal Employees

Posted on in Hiring Employees

Arlington Heights business law attorneysThere are only a few short weeks before Christmas, and people everywhere are scrambling to buy gifts. This means that many retail companies have got to find a way to meet significantly-increased demand. Many stores satisfy this demand by hiring additional staff for the holiday season, but some businesses struggle to find and hire good temporary workers. There are some steps you can take that may make the recruitment and hiring process more efficient as the winter holidays draw near.

Do Not Wait to Hire Seasonal Workers

By the month of December, most retail stores are already deep into the hiring process for seasonal employees. It is important for businesses to be proactive and not wait until the last minute to hire this additional help. Ideally, businesses would start the recruitment process weeks or even months before the holiday shopping season begins. This allows employers to process applications and interview candidates long before the demand increases.

Use Social Media

Social media has become a huge part of many companies’ communications with customers. A business can also use social media to get word out that they are hiring.  Websites like Facebook, Twitter, Tumbler, Instagram, Google+, and LinkedIn are all good places to advertise that your business is looking for additional employees for the holiday season. Some companies also find that word of mouth is a great way to spread awareness that they are hiring. Current, satisfied employees can be a great source of potential leads.

Treat Seasonal Staff the Same as Year-Round Staff

It is tempting for some employers to skimp on training and relationship-building with temporary workers. However, temporary employees should be trained to the same level as other employees doing the same job. This not only ensures that your seasonal workers are prepared to do their job correctly, but it also builds a rapport with them. If a temporary employee feels like they are important and belong, they will be much more likely to return the following year. Furthermore, training and treating seasonal employees adequately means that they will be better prepared to give your customers a high quality of service. Even if the seasonal employees do not return, they can become important referral sources for your business in the future.
